Shockwave was one of the many innovations that helped shape the early internet. Looking back, it feels like it was everywhere. From games and animations to entire websites built around it, Shockwave became a huge part of what made the early web feel so different. Habbo was no exception, with Shockwave being a major part of the experience across many of its hotels around the world.

Of course, we all know what happened eventually. Adobe sunsetted both Shockwave and Flash, leaving a massive part of the early web behind. Over the years, private communities like Casper have had to find different ways to keep these experiences alive. Some of those solutions involve older web browsers, while others use modified projectors and dedicated applications that allow users on Windows, Mac, and Linux to keep playing.

While these solutions work, they aren't quite the same as the original experience.

Back then, you didn't need to download some random application or figure out which outdated browser still worked. You opened your browser, went to Habbo, clicked a button, and you were in.

Starting today, Casper now has a third way to experience the hotel.

Alongside our existing Flash experience powered by Ruffle, the traditional Shockwave experience through an older browser, and our dedicated applications, you'll now see a new dropdown attached to the Enter Shockwave button on the Casper homepage.

Inside that dropdown you'll find SW Beta.

SW Beta gives you a dedicated modern web experience of the original Shockwave client. No additional application downloads, no digging around for an old browser, and no worrying about whether some random file you're downloading is safe. Just open Casper in your browser and jump straight into the hotel.

The project is still in beta, so there are a few bugs and things we're continuing to work out behind the scenes. That said, for the most part, the experience is already incredibly close to the original Shockwave client and we're really excited to finally make it available to everyone.

So if you've been missing that old school Habbo experience, give it a try. Whether you want to revisit the hotel exactly how you remember it or you're just curious about what Habbo felt like back in the day, SW Beta gives you another way to jump right in.

You can also continue using the Flash button on the homepage to experience the early Flash client directly in your browser through Ruffle.

A huge shout out goes to Laynester for creating Project Spark and continuing to work on it and push updates day after day. Projects like this are a huge part of what makes preserving the early web possible, and we're happy to be able to bring that work into Casper.

That's not all, either.

We've pushed a handful of other updates and fixes across the server and website. Several broken controller routes have been fixed, the Hotel View selector under Account Settings has been patched and updated to work with SW Beta, and a few issues with CAPTCHA on the group discussion forums have been resolved. These CAPTCHA issues were previously preventing users from editing posts and comments.

We've also fixed the YouTube BBCode, which now supports YouTube Shorts URLs, added a new dropdown button for the Shockwave clients, and cleaned up a few issues with some of our internal tools.

We're really excited to see where all of this takes Casper and what the future holds for the hotel. There is still plenty more we want to bring back, improve, and preserve from the old web, and we're only getting started.

O Shockwave foi uma das muitas inovações que ajudaram a definir a Internet dos primeiros tempos. Quando olhamos para trás, parece que estava em todo o lado. Desde jogos e animações até sites inteiros construídos à sua volta, o Shockwave tornou-se uma grande parte daquilo que fazia a Internet daquela época parecer tão diferente. O Habbo não foi exceção, com o Shockwave a fazer parte importante da experiência em muitos dos hotéis espalhados pelo mundo.

Claro que todos sabemos o que aconteceu entretanto. A Adobe encerrou oficialmente o suporte tanto ao Shockwave como ao Flash, deixando para trás uma enorme parte da Internet dos primeiros tempos. Ao longo dos anos, comunidades privadas como o Casper tiveram de encontrar diferentes formas de manter estas experiências vivas. Algumas dessas soluções utilizam navegadores antigos, enquanto outras recorrem a projectores modificados e aplicações próprias que permitem aos utilizadores de Windows, Mac e Linux continuar a jogar.

Embora estas soluções funcionem, não são exatamente iguais à experiência original.

Naquela época, não precisavas de instalar uma aplicação qualquer ou descobrir qual era o navegador antigo que ainda funcionava. Abririas o teu navegador, entrarias no Habbo, clicarias num botão e estarias dentro do hotel.

A partir de hoje, o Casper passa a ter uma terceira forma de experimentar o hotel.

Para além da nossa experiência Flash através do Ruffle, da experiência Shockwave tradicional através de um navegador antigo e das nossas aplicações próprias, vais agora encontrar um novo menu junto ao botão Enter Shockwave na página inicial do Casper.

Dentro desse menu vais encontrar o SW Beta.



O SW Beta oferece uma experiência moderna na Web do cliente Shockwave original. Sem aplicações adicionais para instalar, sem teres de procurar um navegador antigo e sem precisares de te preocupar se aquele ficheiro que estás prestes a descarregar é seguro. Basta abrir o Casper no teu navegador e entrar diretamente no hotel.

O projeto ainda está em fase beta, por isso existem alguns bugs e alguns detalhes que continuamos a corrigir nos bastidores. Dito isto, na maior parte dos casos, a experiência já está extremamente próxima do cliente Shockwave original e estamos muito entusiasmados por finalmente disponibilizá-la a todos.

Por isso, se tens saudades daquela experiência clássica do Habbo, experimenta. Quer queiras reviver o hotel exatamente como te lembras dele ou simplesmente descobrir como era o Habbo naquela época, o SW Beta dá-te mais uma forma de entrar diretamente no hotel.

Também podes continuar a utilizar o botão Flash na página inicial para experimentar o antigo cliente Flash diretamente no teu navegador através do Ruffle.

Um enorme agradecimento ao Laynester por ter criado o Project Spark e por continuar a trabalhar nele e a lançar atualizações dia após dia. Projetos como este são uma parte importante da preservação da Internet dos primeiros tempos, e estamos muito felizes por poder trazer esse trabalho para o Casper.

E não ficámos por aqui.

Lançámos também várias outras atualizações e correções no servidor e no site. Foram corrigidas várias rotas de controladores que estavam com problemas, o seletor de Hotel View nas Definições da Conta foi corrigido e atualizado para funcionar com o SW Beta, e resolvemos alguns problemas com o CAPTCHA nos fóruns de discussão dos grupos. Estes problemas estavam a impedir os utilizadores de editar publicações e comentários.

Também corrigimos o BBCode do YouTube, que agora suporta URLs do YouTube Shorts, adicionámos um novo botão com menu para os clientes Shockwave e corrigimos alguns problemas nas nossas ferramentas internas.

Estamos muito entusiasmados para ver onde tudo isto vai levar o Casper e o que o futuro reserva para o hotel. Ainda há muita coisa que queremos trazer de volta, melhorar e preservar da antiga Internet, e estamos apenas a começar.

Como sempre, continua a passar pelo hotel para ficares a par das novidades. O Halloween está mesmo aí à porta e já temos algumas coisas assustadoras a preparar no hotel.
